Balanced Water Chemistry and Water Quality

Having the best water quality in your swimming pool should be the concern of anyone that wants to swim in a residential or commercial pool. The best water quality is dependent on several different factors. Those factors will be discussed in the following blog post. With swim season coming up in several months, you are going to want to make sure you’re swimming pool is ready to go and the water quality is the best not only for the bathers but also to help prolong the lifespan of your investment. The following are factors that play a role:

  • Balanced water chemistry
  • Adequate filtration run times
  • Low Calcium Hardness and TDS
  • No waterborne diseases

The above factors, if handled correctly, can give you the best quality of water. In addition, balancing your water chemistry is vital to prevent algae growth. The following is a breakdown of balanced water chemistry:

  • Chlorine: 1 – 3ppm (winter) and 3 – 5 ppm (summer)
  • pH: 7.4 –  7.8
  • Cyanuric Acid (CYA): 30 – 50 ppm
  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm

As for adequate filtration times, this is going to vary depending on the size of your swimming pool and how much vegetation you have in your backyard. Please note, filtration times will be longer during the summertime to prevent algae growth.

As for Calcium Hardness, TDS, and high levels of CYA, this is a major issue and needs to be monitored regularly to prevent scaling on your water tile line, interior finish, filtration equipment, spillways, and decorative water features.  As pool water evaporates these hardness minerals remain in solution and gradually build up in concentration. When calcium levels get too high, they will affect the chemistry in your swimming pool and scaling will occur. Typically, when your calcium levels reach 600 ppm we recommend a water change. On average this is about every two to three years. In Oregon, most swimming pools struggle with high levels of Cyanuric Acid and The Puripool Process can lower it without draining the pool!

Finally, waterborne diseases like Crypto are an issue mainly in public/commercial swimming pools. If urinating or defecation occurs in a swimming pool this should always be a concern. Just because the pool has adequate amounts of chlorine doesn’t mean it’s free of waterborne diseases. Using RO filtration can remove waterborne diseases.
